"Chesters"

One of our field trips was to Chesters.  This is a view across the fort.  This is private property.  Tourists are allowed only on a small section of the grounds.  Chester is an anglified corruption of the word "castra" or fort in Latin.

This is a statue of Cautes, who was one of  the helpers of Mithras.   Mithras worship came to England because of the military.  Mithras originated in Persia, but was adopted by Roman soldiers because he promised forgiveness.   Several other  exotic religions, in addition to the state  gods, also made their way to England including Isis worship, Judaism, and Christianity.
